Dealing with Dim Dashboard Indicator Lights or Dead Car Battery Instructions Last time, I went over under the hood maintenance. Looks like I missed and am undergoing a very essential process! Happens too much to me over a few years! I think I am getting the hang of it. That concerned issue happens to be the dead battery! Now usually, the dead (or dying) battery comes choking after a rainy period, where it starts bubbling up its acid. Once it starts doing that, the electrically charged voltage of the acid is now exposed to the outside elements. The rain will dilute the charge, which will spread its neutralization to the acid within the battery. Therefore, your battery is now rendered absolutely dead, if not useless. The rainy (does not have to be raining!) weather is usually around and during the winter season, that's when you should check up on those battery acid leaks. In fact, there could be other factors to a dead battery! I know, it's a lot to take in, but I'll make it simple in step by step instructions. 0. VERY IMPORTANT STEP! Usually after a rainy period or some good (3?) months pass, check under the hood to your battery if it had leaked out acid. If it does, take a note of it to prepare changing soon enough. You can make a request to test your battery on your next visit to the auto repair shop. Optionally, there is a said dated sticker on batteries. That's just the service expiration date of battery companies to test and recharge leaked batteries. You might be able to take advantage of such free offers, but when is of a different matter. It's when you see the leak, it's usually a sign that things are going down under. The DANGER SIGN is when the dashboard lights are glowing dim during idle mode. That's when you must start changing your car battery as soon as possible! You have one to two days to do so! Assuming that you pumped up the gas pedal several times beforehand, you may also encountered the engine stuttering or clicking during key ignition, that means your car have trouble starting up; a possible danger sign as well. Ignoring warnings, if your car happens to not start up, well, it's time to call someone, maybe your auto insurance company, to jump start your car with a jumper cable at hand. Jump starting lasts for around 10 minutes. Then, you have one day to change your battery. But yes, your car battery is now considered dead enough. 1. Before you go on to the auto store for a new car battery, you need some things beforehand. You need, proper identification documents for registration protocols, money, some wrenches (to be placed in the back trunk), and maybe a ruler. I didn't mention safety equipment as it may interfere with replacement operation. 2. Hopefully, your car is charged enough to drive towards the destination. Your car will be deactivated during battery removal. With tools in hand, open up the hood and remove the nuts of the clamps and engine electrical load holding down the dying battery. Keep the nuts in the back trunk. Now, it's time to lift that heavy car battery, battery side casing, and battery base out of the engine bay. Put back the wrenches in the back trunk, but keep the ruler. Okay, close the hood, back trunk, and driver side door. You must use the key to lock your unpowered car. Once successfully, remember to keep your keys safely on your persons. You be reopening your car's driver side door with manual, not electrical power. 3. Carry that olde car battery, along with casing and base, to the auto store. Once there, use the ruler measurement of the battery to compare with the brand products there. You can see the price listing if it can be helped. Measurement is not good enough, fit the new battery with the old battery size, casing, and base. Lastly, the positve and negative battery terminals must be in the same position as of the old battery. Once all parameters are checked, you can ready to purchase the new and suitable battery. 4. When you pass the registration protocol and purchase contract, bring the new car battery back to your car. In retrospect, you leave your old car battery to the auto store. With key in hand, manually open the car's driver side door and open up the hood and back trunk. Place the new battery, along with its casing and base, back into the engine bay. Bring back the wrenches to screw back nuts into the clamps and engine electrical load. Make sure that the battery is firmly secure (in base and clamps), along with the terminal and load. 5. It wasn't a problem for me, but a tenant of mines told me that my vehicle is fucking noisy when I warm it up before departing in the cold morning. I had to buy another air filter, plus a penetrating oil and water-displacing spray. The tenant offered to help me, which is okay. Looking under the hood, there were latches to pry, screwed braces to loosen, and tube braces to move. The old air filter was quite dirty, but still looks servicable to me. The air filter box has little leaves on the bottom so a blow dryer is required to flush them out. Before replacing the filter, connected tubes were removed to access the gas pedal pressure valve. That's where the anti-oil and water spray comes in to clean up the dirt and grime and lubricate the moving parts. However, a spray is not good enough. Some cloth towels and a screwdriver is required to wipe away the disposing grime. The value may need to be moved by a second person (example being me) stepping and holding the gas pedal on the driver seat. This could take a while. When the cleaning is complete, the air filter gets replaced, along with the tube braces, screwed braces, and latches set back in place. The test results were a lesser noise in operation and probably lower air vibrations caused by engine rumble. The tenant was mightily happy about that! In addition, I noticed that the steering wheel was turning much faster. It's like it got oiled up! 5. Assuming that nothing will go wrong, put the tools back into the back trunk. Close the hood and back trunk. It's time to start up your car, so you know what to do. I assume you already know the steps. If not, there are text file documents with written instructions/advice. There might be something else missing from this text file, but everything seems go to good. But, just like I said, this process is cyclic.
